Memphis reloads for more C-USA dominance

Memphis continues to wave the C-USA banner for everyone by making it to the NCAA championship game last year plus an Elite Eight appearance the year before. Over the past four years, only UAB, besides the Tigers, has been to the Big Dance from this league. However, this year it appears the gap is narrowing between Memphis and everyone else.

Tulsa did win the first annual College Basketball Invitational last year. Overall, the conference ranked 11th in RPI, still down from their high of ninth in 2004-05, but an improvement over the past two years. Eight of the C-USA’s 12 teams bettered their RPI last season from the previous one.

Memphis has reloaded with a top-five recruiting class and is ready to continue their C-USA undefeated streak, now at 42. Keep your eyes on Tulsa, one of the fastest improving programs in the nation – it has a shot at the title. Larry Eustachy is building a very good program at Southern Mississippi.

Marshall could bust its 20-year non-postseason drought with a good returning nucleus and multiple talented newcomers. UAB very well could be dancing this year by playing small ball, led by bomber Roger Vaden. UTEP has scoring machine Stefon Jackson along with supporting help. Houston retools this season in anticipation of next year. UCF’s Jermaine Taylor can’t do it all himself.

It might be hard to see, but Matt Doherty is building a good foundation at SMU and has a quality frontline. Tulane needs to improve their offensive efficiency. Very little experience halts East Carolina’s improvement. Rice has the coach, now they need the players.

Predicted Order of Finish:
1. Memphis
2. Tulsa
3. Southern Miss
4. Marshall
5. UAB
6. UTEP
7. Houston
8. UCF
9. SMU
10. Tulane
11. East Carolina
12. Rice

    2008-09 Outlook
After two straight last-place finishes, the Pirates improved a bit under first-year coach Mack McCarthy, finishing in 10th place. Unfortunately, the Pirates' took a hit when sophomores Gabe Blair and John Fields both decided to transfer. Four starters are gone with most replacements being young players. Leading scorer Sr. G Sam Hinnant, 11.0 ppg, hit 40.4% of his 3’s. Sr. bomber James Legan and So. Brock Young will likely move into the starting lineup as the Pirates probably go with a three-guard offense. Young has to replace PG Darrell Jenkins, the C-USA leader the past two years in assists. Little depth or experience inside will be a problem. 6-10 So. Chad Wynn will take the post. 6-6 So. Jamar Abrams and burly 6-8 Fr. Darrius Morrow will fight for the #4 spot. Also seeing minutes will be Fr. 6-5 Chris Turner, an able defender, who originally committed to Oregon St.

Houston had 24 wins, the most since the 1991-92 season, making it to the semifinals of the College Basketball Invitational last season. Tom Penders has gotten Houston to the postseason three times and won more games in his first four years, 81, than any other coach in Houston history. Five seniors graduated, including leading scorer, Robert McKiver, 23.6 ppg. Five players do return who saw significant minutes last year. Returning starter 6-4 Kelvin Lewis, 10.2 ppg, is a good defender but inconsistent on offense. PG So. Zamal Nixon showed potential. G DaShaun Williams ranked fourth in C-USA in steals. Former Seton Hall transfer, 6-11 Marcus Cousin, needs to improve his game. Fr. PG Desmond Wade is super-fast pushing the ball up court. JUCO G Aubrey Coleman, 23.0 ppg, can light it up. 6-8 JUCO Qa'rraan Calhoun was a part-time starter at St. Johns his first year and can hit from outside.

Marshall made its last postseason appearance more than 20 years ago. There is optimism the drought stops this year. A good mix of returnees and newcomers will be melded together by second-year coach Donnie Jones, a former assistant at Florida. Returning starters are 6-5 Sr. Wing Markel Humphrey, 13.1 ppg, 5.6 rpg, a third-team all-league pick the past two seasons who played with an injured foot; C-USA All-Freshman pick 6-6 Tirrell Baines, 11.5 ppg, 5.8 rpg, worked well inside; 6-8 Jr. Tyler Wilkerson, 9.5 ppg, 5.9 rpg, had six double-doubles the second half of the season. Three D-1 transfers are eligible: Former Gator Brandon Powell is an athletic slasher, Purdue transfer Chris Lutz led the Big Ten in 3-pt% in 2006-07, and Georgetown transfer 6-7 Octavius Spann adds depth inside. Sr. Darryl Merthie is the initial PG but watch for Fr. Damier Pitts to snatch the job eventually.

    2008-09 Outlook
38-2 Memphis made it from the Elite Eight the previous year to the Championship game where they lost to Kansas. Memphis continued to feed on C-USA teams last year with their winning streak now up to 42. A new influx of blue-chip talent from recruiting ace John Calipari means it will be another exciting year. Gone are three NBA draft choices, Derrick Rose, Chris Douglas-Roberts, and Joey Dorsey. The top five incoming class includes one-and-done G Tyreke Evans, MVP of the McDonald’s All-American game. 6-11 Angel Garcia, should help the Tigers' depth up front along with top-50 forwards Matt Simpkins and Wesley Witherspoon. JUCO Roburt Sallie is projected at PG and could do well. Returning are well-rounded Sr. Wing Antonio Anderson, 8.6 ppg, 3.7 rpg, and Sr. PF Robert Dozier, 9.2 ppg, 6.8 rpg, a good rebounder and defender. 6-10 Jr. Shawn Taggart will be asked to contribute more.

The winless in league play Owls welcome former CAL coach Ben Braun. He has to make the players forget losing their final 20 games last year on the way to a 3-27 record. They now have a home and will play in the renovated Autry Court instead of two different Houston-area venues. Sr. G Rodney Foster is the team’s top returning scorer, 11.2 ppg. SG Cory Pflieger suffered a knee injury in the fifth game last year. Horrendous offense doomed Rice last year, scoring only 55.9 ppg, shooting a pitiful 37.9% from the field, and 27.3% from beyond the arc. An inside force could be 6-10 Navy transfer Trey Stanton, who was named to the Patriot League all-rookie team in his only season with the Middies. SF Lawrence Ghoram, 8.5 ppg, has the team’s best shot. Two 6-8 freshman forwards will get playing time: scorer Emerson Herndon and rebounder Lucas Kuipers.

    2008-09 Outlook
Young is the operative word for the Mustangs this year with just two starters returning and a total of one senior, two juniors, five sophomores and four freshmen coming back From a 4-12 C-USA record, 10-20 overall.  The strength of SMU will be the frontline. 7-1 Bamba Fall, 11.8 ppg, 5.6 rpg, is strong defensively but needs to develop some moves. 6-9 Papa Dia, 9.7 ppg, 6.5 rpg, can clean the glass teaming well with Fall. Providing depth will be 6-10 Fr. Cort Hoge, 6-6 Fr. Frank Otis, and Georgia Tech transfer, 6-9 Mouhammad Faye, who is eligible at semester. Sophomores Alex Malone and Ryan Harp will be contributing perimeter players. So. G Mike Walker showed potential at both guard spots but has to improve his stroke. A recruiting coup happened with the signing of PG Paul McCoy who could start from day one. JUCO G Derek Williams adds depth.

    2008-09 Outlook
Nine letter-winners and four starters come back from last year’s squad, which finished strong, winning nine of its last 13 games. Two of those losses were against Final Four team Memphis. The Golden Eagles are anxious to get to the postseason after last year’s snub. One of the best backcourts in C-USA is comprised of Jr. Jeremy Wise, So. R.L. Horton, and Sr. Courtney Beasley. The three combined for 41.1 points and 7.9 assists per game. All three averaged double-digits, led by Wise’s 18.7. If Wise could improve behind the arc, he would be over 20 ppg. The team itself needs to better its 32.7% 3-point mark. Fr. G LaVance Pennington should get minutes to show his offensive capabilities. RS-Fr. 7-1 Gustavo Lino is raw but adds needed size. Junior F’s Sai’Quon Stone and Andre Stephens will be counted on. Larry Eustachy is upgrading the USM schedule, which improves the program.

    2008-09 Outlook
Tulane started last season 15-6 with a 5-2 league record before an eight-game losing streak and a 2-9 collapse. All-conference PF David Gomez is gone. Overall, 41% of their scoring is gone. Rebounding struggles were evident last year and with F Donnavan Stith also gone, the Green Wave lose two of their top three rebounders. The only proven inside presence is from 6-7 Robinson Louisme, 9.8 ppg, 5.4 rpg. Help will come From 6-7 Sr. Daniel Puckett, 5.1 ppg, 3.1 rpg, Charlotte transfer David Booker, or RS Fr. Jon Anderson. Jr. PG Kevin Sims, 12.2 ppg, returns but is inconsistent shooting. Offense will have to come from So. G Kris Richard, 3.2 ppg, wing Johnny Mayhane, 3.9 ppg, or G Eric Vianney. 6-5 Fr. Kendall Timmons filled the stat sheet up his senior year, 18.2 ppg, 7.4 rpg, 5.1 apg, and 3.9 steals. Tulane needs scoring from somewhere.

    2008-09 Outlook
Doug Wojcik continues to improve this program, going from 11 to 20 to 25 victories over the last three seasons. The Golden Hurricane won the College Basketball Invitational tournament and this year could be better. Two talented juniors lead the way, 6-3 G Ben Uzoh and 7-0 Jerome Jordan. Jordan came on strong the second half of the season, averaging 14.5 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 4.3 blocks per game in Tulsa’s final 12 contests. Uzoh, 15.6 ppg, 5.4 rpg, was Second Team All-C-USA and should provide better leadership. Also back is continually improving 6-5 Sr. F Ray Reese, 7.7 ppg, a good shooter in the clutch. 6-5 Fr. Brandon Jackson and 6-3 JUCO Adrian Hernandez will battle for the point guard position. 6-7 athletic Fr. Armond Battle should contribute. Providing depth inside are freshmen F’s Joe Richard and Bassel Bawji, good glass men. Tulsa needs to improve their defensive aggressiveness.

    2008-09 Outlook
The touted Blazers didn’t live up to Mike Davis’s expectations last year, finishing 23-11 with an NIT bid. Four starters return along with great depth. Gone is 6-9 F Walter Sharpe, 14.2 ppg, 6.9 rpg, who left early for the NBA. Three other front-liners are gone, leaving UAB extremely thin inside. Lawrence Kinnard averaged 13.1 ppg, 7.5 rpg in conference play at PF. Jr. Howard Crawford has to step it up as his role grows and 6-10 Jr. Jeremy Mayfield has to play to his potential. 6-5 Robert Vaden, 21.1 ppg, finished #2 in the nation in 3-pointers made. Sr. G Paul Delaney missed last year after being named Pre-Season All-C-USA. While undersized, there is excellent depth at PG with Aaron Johnson and Sr. Ed Berrios. Sharpshooter Sr. 6-5 Channing Toney, 10.5 ppg, is back. Davis is probably going to have to go small with such little proven talent inside.

    2008-09 Outlook
Just two starters, who are also the only seniors, and five letter-winners, return for UCF from a 16-15, fourth-place C-USA finish. Fortunately, one of them is leading scorer, G Jermaine Taylor, 20.8 ppg, 4.7 rpg, Second-Team All-C-USA. He needs help offensively for UCF to improve. The other returning starter is 6-9 C Kenrick Zondervan, 4.9 ppg, 4.3 rpg. The competition for PG is open with letterman Taylor Young being the only returnee with experience, but he will be challenged by highly-regarded freshmen 5-9 A.J. Rompza and 6-3 Isaac Sosa. Medical redshirt Fr. 6-5 Chris Baez gives depth at SG. Clemson transfer So. A.J. Tyler will be tried at SF after playing in 30 games as a Tiger. 6-9 Jean Michel Yotio could break into the starting lineup after hitting the weight room. frontcourt depth is provided by Fr. P.J. Gaynor and 7-4 project C Jakub Kusmieruk.

    2008-09 Outlook
The Miners are going in the right direction under third-year coach Tony Barbee. UTEP improved by five wins last year, 19-14, and got to the postseason College Basketball Invitational. The nation’s #7 scorer, SF 6-5 Stefon Jackson, has aspirations of making it to the next level. It is not a one-man show, though, as UTEP has a quality versatile backcourt. So. Julyan Stone didn’t shoot too well but had a great ATO ratio, 2.28 to 1. C-USA Sixth Man of the Year, So. Randy Culpepper, 12.8 ppg, will start this year. 6-8 F Tavaris Watts is solid but needs to score more. Memphis transfer wide-load 7-0 Jr. Kareem Cooper will start right away. Mercer transfer 6-5 So. Isaac Gordon and 6-6 Fr. Jason Jones will provide depth at wing. Pass-first Fr. PG Blaise French will play. Improving on their 4-10 road log is mandatory to get to the postseason.
